Actor Steve Coogan discusses his film The Penguin Lessons, another collaboration with screenwriter Jeff Pope. Initially hesitant about starring in a film with a “cuddly penguin,” Coogan was intrigued by the setting in Argentina and the juxtaposition of a dark political past with the penguin’s light-hearted presence. He bonded with the penguins, Baba and Richard, and learned about their mating cycles. Coogan, who studied Spanish 45 years ago, successfully integrated Spanish into his role as a teacher. He reflects on his Irish Catholic background and family of teachers, feeling comfortable in the role. Coogan also speculates on the future of his character from Hamlet 2, envisioning him engaged in community theater. A written version of this interview initially ran at the San Antonio Current.
